New challenges of 2020/2184 EU water directive - Investigation of poly- and perfluorinated alkyl compounds from water

In the European legislative process, it is expected that by 2025, approx. 4,500 new parameters, including perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) chemicals to be tested to protect the geological layer.

The new standard proposed by the European Commission for drinking water specifies a value of 0.1 µg / l for each individual PFAS and 0.5 µg / l for the sum of all PFAS in drinking water.

Perfluoroalkylates and polyfluoroalkylates (PFAS) are a group of widely used synthetic chemicals that accumulate in the human body and in the environment over time, informs the European Environment Agency. PFAS contains over 4,700 chemicals, also referred to as "eternal substances", being extremely persistent in the environment and in the human body, and can cause health problems such as liver disorders, thyroid disease, obesity, fertility problems and cancer.

The term PFAS refers to a large group of synthetic materials, chemicals that include PFOA and PFOS. This family of artificial compounds also includes hundreds of other chemicals, all similar but slightly different in structure and chemical properties. What all per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances have in common is that they comprise a chain of carbon and fluorine atoms.

In addition, they have similar uses and applications in the manufacturing process. In fact, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances exist in a variety of products for their properties of water, oil, grease and stain repellent.
